TESOL:
acronym for "Teaching English to speakers
of other languages". ESOL refers to English when taught to non-English
speakers in English-speaking countries. Thus, Spanish-speaking immigrants
living in the United States learn ESOL. It is also the acronym for the international
professional association, Teachers of English
to Speakers of Other Languages.
TEFL:
acronym for "Teaching English as a foreign language", meaning in
countries where English is not the major language. Japanese high school students
in Tokyo study English as a foreign language. You may have studied French
as a foreign language during your high school years in the United States.
Dr. Frederick L. Jenks is an internationally-known "teacher of teachers" of ESOL and EFL. In addition to his thirty-four years of preparing teachers of ESOL and EFL at Florida State University, where he designed the graduate programs in TESOL/TEFL and the reknowned Center for Intensive English Studies, he has delivered graduate TEFL course work for the University of Miami in Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Costa Rica and for Aramco-Saudi Arabia. Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of State, he has lectured throughout the former Yugoslavia and delivered intensive TEFL workshops (one-two weeks) for public school teachers in Slovenia, Croatia, Herzegovina, the former Czechoslovakia and Venezuela. In 2006, under the auspices of the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and Americas (FAVACA), he led two weeks of intensive workshops for K-12 English teachers in San Pedro Sula, and Copan Ruinas, Honduras.
His TESOL activities have included more than 100 workshops for ESOL teachers, scores of keynote speeches at major national and state conferences, and frequent curriculum development consultancies with public school systems, universities and state departments of education.
Dr. Jenks has been called "the father of Panama TESOL" for his assistance in establishing a national affiliate with the international organization, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. He has delivered keynote addresses to national TEFL conferences in Colombia, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica and Spain.
In 2002, he was chosen by TESOL to receive the prestigious "TESOL Heinle & Heinle Award for Excellence in Teaching", in recognition of his outstanding teacher education work throughout the United States and overseas. In 2007, Dr. Jenks was selected as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in TEFL, and awaits overseas assignments in 2008.
