When Oil was King!

In the early 1900's, Olean boasted of the largest petroleum stores in the world.

Two major railroad lines, the Pennsylvania and the Erie-Lackawanna, supported the oil industry. 1910.

Men without facial hair and women wearing cosmetics were required to purchase AND wear these buttons

during the weeks before and during the Sesquicentennial Celebration.

 

In 2004, I donated a large collection of Sesquicentennial memorabilia, including the only known original poster for the "Oleanarama" pageant and the only known commercial store banner, to the Olean Historical Society/Museum.
